Three years ago Compost Records was breaking new grounds with the formation of the Blacklabel Series. The aim was to put Compost back on the dancefloor map and into the cases of the world’s leading international DJs. The formula was easy: less jazz and soul - more house and techy stuff. The outcome wasn’t the “typical” Compost sound that people related with the Munich based label. This was bleepy and creepy, dark and pumping! Distinguishable by its artwork, colour and sound, the Blacklabel Series turned out to be the perfect imprint to release forward thinking club tracks, DJ tools and sonic experiments – “because Zeitgeist won’t stop!” (De:Bug magazine on Blacklabel). To this day there are 30 releases on the Blacklabel imprint and the backing and praising from key players worldwide is growing with each new 12″…

The third volume of the “Blacklabel Series” unites the brightest moments of the successful 12″ series on a CD compilation – this time in form of a special DJ mix done by uprising Blacklabel act Jay Shepheard. This new jack arrived on the scene last year with the release of his debut EP “Blacklabel #19″. With the help of strong DJ support from top Jocks like Joris Voorn, Ben Watt, Prins Thomas, Marcus Worgull, or Ludovic Llorca this EP gave Jay good profile straight off the bat which he built upon nicely with the follow up EP “Blacklabel #28″ released in December 2007. At the moment he is finishing his next 12″ on Compost including three new tracks from Jay himself and a strong Manuel Tur & Dplay remix of his first hit “Pipes’N'Sneakers” (the last track on this compilation). Also keep your eyes open for his recent remix works for Juno Records and Faze Action.

Karuan´s long awaited followup to his debut “Dohuki Ballet” is finally here.
Entitled “Pop Arif”, album no.2 is nothing you might have expected after listening to his first offering. But yes, “Pop Arif” is magic. What you will be hearing is the transition of an artist from simply being a composer to a true songwriter.

Instead of riding on the success of “Dohuki Ballet” and dropping a second album straight after, he let his style evolve to the next level. In the tradition of another famous Kurdish musician, Mohamed Arif, his music has taken a slight turn towards pop music. But neither Mr.Arif nor Karuan intendend to take this route, it all came totally natural. The album title therefore, can be understood as a homage to modern Kurdish music in general and Mr. Arif specifically. The first thing one will notice, when listening to “Pop Arif” is the heavy use of vocals compared to album no.1. For those who know Karuan personally, this will come as no surprise. Karuan had been singing and playing guitar in Indie-bands through out his teenage years and beyond.

The incorporation of vocals opens up a new dimension, making it even harder to describe “Pop Arif” in a couple of words. Bottom line though, is that Karuan is playing in his own league now. We here at Sunshine call it “Unique Urban-oriental Soul”. His talent to incorporate the most diverse instruments into his clever and thought out arrangements have been driven to perfection on “Pop Arif”. Flutes, guitars and foremost vocals are arranged and fitted into his soulful productions. The outcome is a timeless album, full of real songs and not just simple tracks.

“Tales Of Trust” ist also kein Dephazz-Album. Es ist aber das Solo-Album von Dephazz-Produzent und Klangmaler Pit Baumgartner Die Freude am Hörspiel und an der Ton-Collage hört man jedem der wohltemperierten Musikstücke an. Mit seiner “organisch-elektronischen Musik” lässt sich Baumgartner gerne von alten “Krautrock-Legenden” inspirieren, wie z.B. “Kraan”, “Guru Guru” oder “Can”. “In diesem Kontext entfaltet das Album “Tales of Trust” seine musikalische Qualität am besten”, so Baumgartner, der bei seinen geschmackvollen Experimenten nie den griffigen Groove  aus den Ohren verliert. “Higher Love”, “Cruise Waikiki” unter anderem entstanden in Kooperation mit dem Schlagzeuger Jan Fride (Kraan).

Weitere musikalische Gäste sind unter anderen die Sängerinnen Giedre Kalciauskiene (Litauen), Jutta Glaser (BRD) und Angel Jones (USA) sowie die Sopranistin Constanze Backes (BRD) die für jeden a-tonalen Spaß zu haben ist. Dem “ewigen Jazz” in Baumgartners musikalischem Spektrum pflegen Joo Kraus, Thomas Siffling und Frank Spaniol. Johannes Krayer spielt die wohl “schmierig-schönste” Pedal Steel Gitarre südlich von Frankfurt und mit Tobias Escher stellt sich ein junges Talent vor, dessen Akkordeon-Spiel gerade durch die Zusammenarbeit mit den alten Haudegen von den Pogues geadelt wurde.

Das Düsseldofer Label Unique Records ist bekannt für feinsten Clubsound zwischen Funk, Breakbats, Deep Funk, NuJazz und Artverwandtem. Dabei hat Unqiue klasse Artists wie Malente, Boca 45, DJ Regal, N.O.H.A. und die Sweet Vandals am Start. Für „This is DJs choice“ hat man die beiden Schweizer Durchstarter-DJs Soulinus und DJ Pun gewinnen können. Und die beiden machen ihren Job sehr gut und stellen 13 erstklassige Tracks zusammen. Sie hätten es sich bei dem guten Backkatalog bedienen können. Das war ihnen aber wohl zu einfach. Stattdessen gibt es zahlreiche exklusive Tracks von Dusty, Tombee, Keno 1, Radio Citizen, Deen the dusty button, Beatfanatic und Sweet Vandals. Allesamt hohem Niveau, enorm groovig, aber dennoch mit langer musikalischer Halbwertzeit. Die weniger exklusiven Tracks gab es aber teilweise bisher auch nur auf Vinyl. Allein schon wegen „Giorgio´s brother“ vom Eddie Roberts Quintett im phänomenalen Lack of Afro Remix lohnt sich die Anschaffung.Einer der besten Compilations der letzten Jahre zum Thema.

We go on with another round of our blackfish productions EP Series by publishing an all about round sounding mini album which couldn’t be more refreshing. Flashbaxx is the artist and he´s the Bavarian based producer Daniel Stenger, who´s not unknown in his genre. His productions have been already released on compilations like Flooristik, Livingroom Adventures or Winter Chill in the past. The EP No. 8 „The changing tides“ is going to refresh you by groovy beats, partly extended to club music sound, but never loosing laxness over all.His affection for acts like Jazzanova, Yonderboy, Tosca or Mo’Horizon can´t be missed, but he always impresses with his own interpretation. Earthly beats merged with real basses, E-Pianos and a classic combination of instruments set up the typical sound of Daniel. As a clever entrepreneur, Flashbaxx understands very well to create an easily going flow, which will catch you from the very first to the last second with a comfortable jazzy and deep emotion. Even further Flashbaxx is shaking the German club scene by the support of PFNA and Soulbrother. They joined up to the Sonic Soul Division and had a major blast in rhein main area.All in all the EP offers a fine club sound on one side, but on the other hand, enjoying the sound at home with a glass of red wine or a martini works perfectly and will surely addict you to the sound of Flashbaxx.You better shall not miss that piece of the blackfish productions EP Series!

Immer wieder werde ich gefragt, welchen Sound ich auflege und jedes Mal ist es schwierig. Da sagt man so was wie Fort Knox Five, Quantic, Flow Dynamics und Co. und bekommt unverständliche Blicke. Ist aber auch verständlich, da die wenigsten NuFunk und Freestyle-Acts CDs veröffentlichen und wenn dann leider oft nicht wahrgenommen werden. Entsprechende hochwertige Compilations dazu gab es bisher leider auch nicht. Und nun kommt der „Kulturspiegel“ um die Ecke und veröffentlicht zusammen mit Sony eine richtig gute Compilation zum Thema. In der Reihe „Kulturkantine“ werden feine Clubsounds präsentiert. Für die Ausgabe „The funky groove session“ hat man einen wahren Szenekenner verpflichten können: Bernd (Kinski“ Rösler. Er war jahrelang bei Stereo Deluxe und Switchstance tätig und legt genau auch diesen Sound als DJ auf.
Er hat auf 2 CDs 32 Tracks zusammengestellt, die jeden Club und jede Party zum Ausflippen bringt. Mit dabei sind bekannte Namen wie Stereo MCs, Quantic (allein und mit seinem Soul Orchester), Black Grass, Alice Russell, Sweet Vandals, Ed Royal, Flow Dynamics, Malente. Daneben gibt´s auch frischen Sound von upcoming Acts wie Geriba, Kutiman, Dusty, Protassov und vielen mehr. Das Spektrum ist entsprechend weit: Downbeats, Deep Funk, Breakbeats – teils mit jazzy oder latin Einflüssen – aber immer mit einer gehörigen Portion FUNK.
Super Compilation und dank des niedrigen Preises ein absolutes Muss für alle Freunde, guter, frischer und funky Musik.
